As the State of insecurity worsens in the country, the Nigerian Customs and the Nigerian Police yesterday separately made seizures of arms and ammunition at the Murtala Mohammed international Airport and Seme border where different calibre of weapons and ammunitions were recovered.
Three high calibre air rifles which were seized at the airport was said to have been concealed as golf bags in a carton and was intercepted in the courier shed through where it would have been delivered to an unnamed importer in Abuja through UPS Courier service.
In the seizure at Seme border, the Lagos Police command said it intercepted pump action guns concealed in 26 cartons bales of cloth where 8450 live cartridges were also hidden and arrested retired naval officer, James Korinjoh and 27 year old Maduabuchi Udeh while a third, Ejike is on the run.
Parading the guns before newsmen yesterday at the Customs Command at the MMIA, the Area Customs Controller, Epowei Charles Edike explained that it took the eagle eyes of officers of the command to intercept the prohibited ammunition, which were brought in gross contravention of existing rules and regulations.
Edike explained that the guns, packaged as Golf bags, also had in the cartons, pellets, and other prohibited items, which will not be allowed into the country, except the importer has relevant permits, either from the inspector general of Police and the Comptroller General of Customs.
