Emotions failed the chairman of Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State, Mr. Ekeng Nsa Henshaw, penultimate Monday, as he made attempts to exonerate himself from the allegations raised by his police orderly that he was on the verge of eliminating those opposed to his second term ambition.
The chairman, who did not join issues with the police orderly who made the grievous allegations against him, broke down in tears at the end of the confession, saying: “My wife sent me a text message from Lagos telling me she read in newspapers of my plans to kill some people. This is embarrassing to me. I have no such plans.”
He wept uncontrollably and could not be calmed by the Area Commander of the Akim Area Command of the Nigerian Police in Calabar
It would be recalled that in the last four weeks, Henshaw has been a guest of the police in Calabar following petitions by Mr. Mfon Bassey, Calabar South People Democratic Party (PDP) chapter secretary and Hon. Charles Ntiero, Councilor Ward 6, that the chairman, based on information revealed by his police orderly, Matthew Ibor, has concluded plans to eliminate those standing on the way of his re-election.
Consequently, penultimate Monday, the Akim Area Command of the Nigerian Police Force in Calabar invited the chairman, the police orderly, Mfon Bassey, Charles Ntiero and all those indicted to make their statements and cross examine each other with a view to helping the police in further investigation into the matter.
Checks by THISDAY indicate that all the parties were invited by the police on Friday, February 8 but following the chairman’s absence, the interrogation was shifted to Monday, February 11. All the parties, including their lawyers and some supporters honoured the invitation on this day.
The Area Commander of Akim, Dr. O. T. Walter, the investigating police officer (IPO) ASP Odim Bassey and other senior police officers of the command were present but Henshaw declined to be the first speaker as directed by the Area Commander preferring that his estranged bodyguard speak before him. This request was obliged.
The police orderly spoke with confidence and refused to be intimidated by his superiors, alleging that the council chairman was planning to eliminate Bassey and Ntiero because they were reportedly against his re-election and that Henshaw had already contacted some herbalists in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States to do the dirty job for him before summer this year when Local Government Elections will hold in Cross River.
Ibor shocked everyone present with his revelation that Henshaw had allegedly perfected plans to kill Bassey and Ntiero and that he went to Bassey’s house to tell him while he phoned the councillor to inform him. He went further to say the chairman was a key member of the “AXE” in Cross River. This infuriated senior police officers who tried in vain to gag him.
He reaffirmed his earlier position that what he was doing was not for monetary compensation but to save innocent lives more so as a Christian he loves humanity and was directed by God to reveal the diabolical plan so that innocent blood would not be shed. It was obvious that senior police officers were not happy with Ibor.
