Cornerstone Insurance Plc is partnering the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to enlighten road users on traffic laws and safety measures and inculcate healthy driving habit among Nigerians drivers.
The company said it was concerned about the increasing rate of road accidents and the associated carnage on highways across the nation, largely attributed to human error.
The Managing Director in charge of Life and Retail business at Cornerstone Insurance, Mr. Tokunbo Bello, made this known during a rally joint organised by Cornerstone and FRSC at Ojota new garage in Lagos recently. He said the programme seeks to reduce the number of death and disruption of traffic on major roads across the country.
“This year Cornerstone Insurance has been appointed as official insurer and partner on the ‘Decade of Action’ project of the FRSC, Lagos command out of recognition for its consistent social contributions to the society. The starting point was the education and reorientation of motorist and road-users by promoting a positive behavioural shift and ultimately making our roads safer for all,” he said.
He recalled that FRSC said 48 per cent of world registered vehicle population was responsible for about 90 per cent of 1.2 million deaths recorded annually in road crashes and that a larger percentage of these were in developing countries.
Bello explained that the partnership on ‘Road Safety Campaign Rally’ was in line with Cornerstone’s corporate social responsibility (CSR), which involves collaborating with well meaning organisations and groups to bring enduring benefits to the people.
He also recalled that the underwriting firm donated relief materials to flood victims and visited flood ravaged areas across the nation last year.
Cornerstone Insurance, according to him, operates 14 branches and sales outlets across the country and has grown to become a leading light in insurance sector by positively impacting on the larger society in its 21 years in business.
The leader of the FRSC team at the rally, Mr. Irele Wuyi, advised road users to make positive difference in the aspect of safety on the roads by not allowing users’ safety to be in the hands of other road users.
“This is one cardinal principles of defensive driving, as road crashes do not just occur but are caused by our errors and outright abuses. Our intervention to create a safer motoring environment can start from determining within us to reduce the suicidal speed and maintain common sense speed limit; not take drugs or alcohol before embarking on that journey; obey all traffic rules and regulations; pay more attention to our health and general well being as well as properly main our vehicles,” he said.
He observed that 9 out of every 10 road traffic crashes in the country were caused by human error and as result positive attitudinal changes, correct knowledge of traffic rules and regulations, as well as placing value on human life would go a long way to make our roads safer.
He also commended Cornerstone Insurance for being part of the initiative, urging the firm to continue in its effort to impact positively on the society.
