In a bid to address the growing unemployment rate in the country, CADD Centre, a computer skill acquisition firm, said it would add some value to technology development in the country and ensure that at least 2,000 Nigerians are employable yearly.
Managing Director of CADD Centre, Mr. Saravanan Karaiadiselvan, explained that the firm had invested over N70 million in capacity development that would create employment opportunities.
According to him, the firm intends to spend more since it is looking at a long-term project, which can train 60,000 people annually in 30 centres across the country.
”We have been in the country for the last 12 years. We first came to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where we have a centre that trained personnel from all the oil companies in that region including Shell. In 2007, we opened another centre in Abuja where that catered for government workers such as engineers and other corporate professions. But now, we are focusing on the students market that is why we set up a centre in Lagos,” Karaiadiselvan said.
He explained that the firm would soon start working with students and schools to help reduce the unemployed rate.
He added that the firm would commence with engineering programmes and move to other non- engineering courses in the second phase like interior, graphics and fashion designs.
” Our job is to create employment for local people and make them employable in this country and outside the country. We understand that companies placed high premium on technical skills of graduates of engineering and make them employable by giving them the best training conducted by experts,” he said.
He explained that the firm has training programme for school leavers with Senior School Certificate Exams (SSCE) from the age of 17.
“We call them Draftsmen in the industry and they are of different shades such as Mechanical Draftsmen, Civil Draftsmen and Architecture Draftsmen among others,” he said.
Pleased with the support from CADD Centre, immediate past Executive-Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), who is currently the Chairman Open Media, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, commended the management for the feat it has achieved.
“It is actually timely and promises to deliver the kind of changes that the managing director spoke about. When we opened the telecoms industry in 2001, one thing was clear that we would need plenty of skills to support the expansion that follows. In those days, we decided to set up the Digital Bridge Institute in Abuja to help train manpower and that institution is still running,” Ndukwe said.
According to him, the CADD project is something good and laudable, saying he is very happy to be associated with it.
“And I hope that Nigerians will take advantage of this. Capacity training in new technologies is the way to go in various areas of endeavour in this age. I would want to wish the people behind it well and I promise to make myself available for them in the future,” Ndukwe added.
Executive Director, Riverbank Technologies and Engineering Services Limited, Mr. Ayoola Jolayemi, said “Nigeria is ripe for technological advancement. We do not want our people to be the ones to carry the bags any more. We want them to be the ones issuing the cheque books and controlling the mega finance.”
