The agitation by the people of Oriendu autonomous community in Umuahia North local government of Abia State for their traditional ruler to abdicate his throne over his alleged shooting of a youth has set the community on the boiling point.

Eze Ajomiwe, the Ndu I of Oriendu is presently standing trial at a chief magistrate court, Afugiri for possession of firearms and attempted murder, a charge he has vehemently denied.

Already scores of people have continued to mount protests over the continued stay on the throne of the embattled Eze. In one of such protests yesterday at the premises of the chief magistrate court Afugiri, the angry crowd demanded for the revocation of the bail granted their royal father and his dethronement without further delay.

Spokesman of the protesters, Chief Lazarus Maduako, told journalists that since the shooting incident of January 23, 2013, Eze Ajomiwe has not deemed it fit to apologise to the people hence “we have concluded that he has no human sympathy and not fit to be the Eze.”

Patron of the development union, Chief Victor Okeuhie, who accompanied the protesters along with other elders of the community, said that the Oriendu people have reached the elastic limit tolerating the excesses of their traditional ruler hence the peace in the community  could be compromised.

“We want him removed as Eze and the cancellation of the bail granted him,” adding that the relevant authorities should listen to the cries of the people “to prevent anarchy in Oriendu”.

To worsen the matter for the embattled royal father, he  is also facing division in his cabinet as the traditional Prime Minister, Chief Paul Anyalewechi, has withdrawn his support for the traditional ruler, saying that he would rather side with the majority of the people.
