Facts have emerged on why the congress of the Nigeria Premier League dissolved the Chief Victor Baribote-led board even after the chairman had unceremoniously stepped aside.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, a member of the NPL congress and General Manager of ABS FC Alloy Chukwuemeka said Chief Baribote was 'a driver of a bad vehicle'.

The former Yobe Desert Stars media chief argued that the purported stepping aside of Baribote as the league boss could not guarantee their stay because if a vehicle is bad, changing just the driver alone cannot make a journey smooth rather it is advisable to overhaul it or better still change to a new vehicle entirely to have a smooth movement.

He stressed further that the Congress identified maladministration, financial rascality as well as lack of transparency and goodwill to attract sponsorship as some of the ills of the former board.

Chukwuemeka, however, restated that their removal was not to witch hunt them rather it was done in the best interest of the league system even as he urged them to accept it in good faith as a sacrifice for our nation's football to grow.

Way forward

On the Way Forward, the SWAN head of Information and Strategy said the entire league system would be redefined, refined and reorganized in collaboration with all stakeholders to address the salient issues like lack of sponsorship, poor officiating, indemnities of officials. insecurity at venues, players welfare etc.

“You are aware that the Congress proposed February 16 as kick off date for the new season, that will allow us to observe the Nation Cup while the secretariat will also have ample time to tidy all registration formalities, the draws as well as other pre-season activities, he said.

“Most importantly the expected interim board will use the opportunity to identify and collaborate with all relevant stakeholders in the league like the govt, NFF, clubs, referees, security agents, players union etc in order to partner together to ensure synergy of efforts which will help them in building the capacity to tackle the identified problems," Chukwuemeka concluded.

He called on Nigerians to be patient as this revolution in the league system is expected to take our football to an enviable height.
