Catholic Priests across the country have enjoined Christians to see Christmas celebration as a moment for building lasting peace and unity.

This was the focus of messages delivered by the clerics who officiated at this years’ family evening of nine lessons and carols with the family of the former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mr. Jackson Gaius-Obaseki’s family in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

In his homily, Very Rev. Festus Ogbonmwan of St. Gabriel the Arch-Angel parish, Benin City said unity was paramount for progress and national stability, urging Christians to build on such unity that would sustain the nation.

Ogbonmwan, whose exaltation of unity was further spiced by Rev. Fr. Andrew Aigbe Obinyan of St. Patrick Parish, Ugbowo pleaded for oneness and peace among Nigerians.

“We shall now sing a new song for our sorrow has gone. Most recently, looking at the sorrow and happenings in the country today, we certainly should have some recourse to review if there is any need for Christmas. But with Christ birth, this is good news and it tells that our God is with us and shall deliver the country from all our troubles.

“And that is why with Christmas, Christians should rekindle the faith believing in unity as an agenda for the success of transformation and progress,” stressing “Let us share the joy of our risen Christ with his birth, with others, this Christmas.”

Ogbonmwan, therefore, appealed to Christians to pursue peace at all cost and pray for the country’s unity.

In a goodwill message, Gaius-Obaseki and his wife, Dr. Roselyn Obaseki, thanked guests for joining the family to mark the 20th yearly family evening of nine lessons and carol.

Gaius-Obaseki, who is the Chairman of Brass LNG, maintained that the occasion had form part of culture towards evangelising the good news of God’s kingdom at Christmas.

Readers included: Hon. Justice Olubor; former President, Customary Court of Appeal; Hon. Justice Uwaifo, former Justice of Supreme Court; Osaro Eghobamien, (SAN), Mrs. P.E.B Ukor and Dr. Peter Gaius Obaseki, son of the celebrant.

Others were: Prof. Okojie, Gen. Godwin Abbe (rtd) and the first Executive Governor of the state, Chief John Odigie Oyegun.
