Capt. Emmanuel Ihenacho

By Ejiofor Alike

Officials of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and armed forces personnel attached to the Global West Vessel Specialist Limited (GWVSL) Friday quizzed a former Minister of Interior, Capt. Emmanuel Ihenacho over allegation that his company received stolen petroleum products in its depot.

The officials, who came with a bus-load of armed soldiers, swarm the corporate head office of Integrated Oil and Gas Limited owned by the former minister at No. 19C Marine Road, Apapa, Lagos.

The soldiers who arrived as the former minister was about to brief journalists on the issue at about 12 noon, disrupted the briefing and also prevented journalists, workers and other visitors from leaving or entering the premises.

The siege lasted over an hour before the former minister was taken away to NIMASA office by the security personnel. He was afterwards reportedly driven to the office of the State Security Services at Shangisha, also in Lagos, for further interrogation.

But a group, Kings of Igbo Nation, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to order a full investigation into the issue, describing the allegation as a ploy aimed at destroying the reputation of the former minister.

The group’s president, Sir Uche Uche, said: “Yesterday, armed men under the cover of NIMASA raided Integrated Oil Tank farm at Apapa Lagos. This facility is owned by Capt. Emmanuel Ihenacho, one of the most credible Nigerians. Today again, another armed gang raided the offices of Integrated Oil and Gas and attempted to take into custody Capt. Ihenacho a former Minister of Interior. The Air force personnel that led the operation bragged that he can only take others from Tompolo who is the head of the Global West Vessel contract.

“Their reason was that a vessel carrying stolen oil came to rent Integrated Tank Farm storage facility and discharged there on a through put basis. The truth is that the said vessel M.T. Grace belongs to a relative of the Director General (DG) of NIMASA and the said oil belonged to his brother,” he said.

Uche stated that the vessel that came and discharged at Integrated tank farm tendered to Integrated Oil every relevant clearance document from NIMASA, NPA, DPR, Navy, Customs and other relevant agencies.

“We firmly believe, someone connected to the leadership of NIMASA and Tompolo plotted this to dent the very clean image of a noble Nigerian. As the leader of Kings of Igbo Nation (KIN), we demand a full thorough investigation and restoration of the rights of this Nigerian as this desperate act cannot stand the smell test. If this evil is allowed here, the International Community will not allow it and certainly Igbos will not allow it,” he said.

NIMASA officials had on Thursday arrested some workers of the company at its depot at Apapa, Lagos.

Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mr Patrick Akpobolokemi, said the vessel which had impounded is used by pirates to hijack oil-bearing vessels and steal their fuel. He noted that it was run by a cartel whose activities have long been under the agency’s surveillance.

GWVSL, a firm believed to be owned by a former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo is executing a contract said to be worth $103.4 million for the supply of 20 vessels for the use of the military authorities to secure the waterways.

Acting on a tip-off, the officials had tracked a cargo “M. T. Grace” allegedly laden with stolen petroleum products to the tank farm of the company.
The security personnel took over the company’s tank farm, arrested some workers, including one Captain Nicholas Okotie, who was allegedly transporting hijackers of vessels to the high sea.

Ihenacho had told THISDAY that the invasion was part of the orchestrated campaigns to damage his reputation and destroy his businesses.

He noted that instead of arresting the owners of the controversial cargo, the invaders harassed, intimidated, arrested and took away some of his workers in handcuff.

“They invaded our facility. They beat up our people and journalists. They seized the phones of our people and took them away in handcuffs. The objective is to cripple our business. We worked so hard to create employment opportunities for Nigerians but the encouragement we receive is harassment, and intimidation. We are not going to run away from our country because this country belongs to all of us,” he explained.
Unconfirmed reports last night claimed the ex-minister had been released.

  • This hasn't come as a surprise. It is an orchestrated action by those who feel intimidated by the style, popularity, and goodwill the humble ibo servant enjoys. We are not moved by this cowardly act being perpetrated by enemies of progress and warn that there will be dire consequences if our amiable representative and his staff are not released unconditionally.Has the federal government dealt with the oil subsidy, pension fraud, and contract scam thieves. There are looking for fire where there's no smoke.A word is enough for the wise.

  • This is very unfortunate. In a country where job opportunity is becoming increasingly scarce and a pipe dream, a government that cannot create an enabling environment for job is creation is always plotting the destructions of biz moguls who are taking risks to invest a country like Nigeria. What a shame!

  • Though a man is innocent till proven guilty, its part of the job of security units to arrest suspects. Receivers of stolen goods are as culpable as the thieve himself. Infact its the ability to dispose stolen goods that is the biggest motivation.

The reason corruption thrives in nigeria is because there is the believe that you can get away with it. The second reason is these regional and tribal contraptions that start screaming once one of the big fishes enters a net.

Im unable to understand in one breath kings of igbo nations (whatever that means) calling for thorough investigation and claiming that iheanacho be released. Have they forgotten this same was once suspended and later dropped as minister? Is the arrest not first and formost to investigate? Has the leopard been able to change its skin color? I doubt. It is common knowledge before any arrest of high profile nigerian happens the matter must have exceeded what yorubas call "o ko ja be careful". For the arrest of iheanacho isnt the news the news and an irritating one at that is this ignoble kings (i doubt) of igbo nation ranting.

Until all these praise singers and rich men's coutiers desist from their irritations we cant go forward against corruption in high places. Kudos for the courage to make this arrest for whatever its worth goes to nimasa and the other security units. Thumbs down to kings of igbo

  • I am really very surprised at the comments of you guys here. Did u read the story at all? Integrated Oil and Gas has storage facilities to rent out to who ever wishes to rent and store petroleum products. A certain vessel that carried products was given clearance by NIMASA, NPA, Navy, DPR, Customs and other relevant agencies. The vessel went to hire the facility of Integrated Oil. After inspecting the clearance papers, Integrted accepted the products and collected its fee. Is this a crime? We all know that most tank farms or depots are hired to anyone that wants to make use them. According to reliable sources, SSS investigated and found Integrated non-culpable. So I do not see any reason why you guys should be ming comments on something you know nothing about. Let the Presidency carry out further investigation on this matter and where any is found guilty, let that person face the music alone. However, If Integrated Oil is not found guilty, what of the damaging story that has already been published against the company? It is really very sad that our security agencies do not have competent personnel to take responsibilities for certain issues. What I expected then to have done was to arrest the vessel and the owner of the products.

  • David if u read my comments, I said that when one is not in a position to make comment about anything due to lack of adequate information, it is better for that person to keep his comments to himself. Yes, Ihenacho was suspended as a Minister, recalled and then dropped. Did you bother to find out why he was suspended in the first place? Why he was recalled and then dropped when Goodluck won? If u care to know, go and find out. It was purely the politics of Imo State. Ikedi Ohakim, as most people as aware managed the affairs of the state as a personal company. 90% of Imo people didn't want Ohakim. Ihenacho did not support him as well because he is from the same state. During the primaries for Senatorial seats, due process was not observed and Kema Chikwe was produced. Most people wanted Chris Anyanwu and when she lost, she went to APGA. Ihenacho supported her and she came out the winner. When Chris won, Kema cried to Obasanjo and complained that one of the reasons she lost was because the Minister(Ihenacho) supported Chris. This was how Obasanjo ensured that Ihenacho was suspended for 'anti-party' politics. Please go and make enquiries. When Goodluck found out that Ihenacho was not guilty of anything, he recalled him. However, when Goodluck won the election, there were so many forces that didn't want Ihenacho to be considered as they felt that the man was gathering more publicity. This was why Goodluck did not consider him as a Minister. So, please I appeal to u to always cross check your facts before u make any comments about someone.

  • It is an insult on intelligence of Igbos and Nigerians in general that Iheanacho was arrested and it is also a shame on the Govt. of GEJ.When the whole world knows all the oil thieves in nig. who are the retired Generals and former heads of state in Nigeria and their civilian associates People like Gen. Theo Danjuma had looted the treasury and stole billions of dollars from oil revenue that he could not know what to do with the Money he has stolen and from IBB/ Abdulsalam/OBJ/ Lawan/Otedola etc they have stolen billions from the oil located in Eastern Nigeria and yet Igbos who own the Oil/land have never benefited from it and yet this Gotv. have an effrontery to disgrace and arrest Iheanacho on mission of witch hunting due to loss of Imo state to APGA by PDP, Nig made over $800 billions USD in oil revenue since 1999 and from these oil revenue. how much was used to build infrastructure in eastern nig? or how many people from eastern nig participated in looting the treasury of nig or stealing the oil money. PDP should leave Iheanacho alone and start arresting the real treasury looters and recover the stolen money for the benefits of all naija. The stolen nigerian money in swiss banks alone is over $500 billion dollars and naija gotv has so far refused to answer call from swiss gotv. to repatriate the stolen money back to naija.

  • I am beginning to ask what exactly is the remit of NIMASA. My little understanding of the workings of the industry and the objectives of NIMASA are four fold: maritime security, maritime safety, marine environment protection and the maintenance of seafarers standards. It is NOT the business of NIMASA to get involved in oily business unless ofcourse this is a ploy to protect their usual business in the creeks! Is NIMASA now doing the job of NNPC and DPR? This militant DG of NIMASA is just behaving like a bull in a China shop. One day the source of his so called strength (Aso Rock) won't be there to protect him. It is your time, Mr Akpobolokemi, or is it ? There is more to this matter than meets the eye. One day monkey go, go market e no go return. Is Jonathan still after Iheanacho, and now sent NIMASA after him ? Me wonder o!!!!!!. By the way, I think we should add, after Tompolo's name, Chief of Naval Staff. Why wasn't Tompolo's name on the honours list ? That list is definitely not complete!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ jac-steven, jac-vincent, jac-clinton, jac-ihenacho (or whatever else you choose to call yourself), we are not interested in your petty partisan politics. As far as I can understand from the story, Mr. Ihenacho was taken in for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation. He has not been charged with anything, but if and when charged he can defend himself in open court with legal evidence, not on the pages of newspaper with petty political and ethnic babble.
