Bola Tinubu, ACN Leader

Last Saturday's presidential election is generating stern controversies in the rank of the progressives as the Congress for Progressive Change presidential candidate, Major General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) has blamed former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu for selling South-West to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Buhari Monday spoke with THISDAY through his spokesperson, Comrade Yinka Odumakin on phone, alleging that Tinubu, who is the national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) struck a deal with President Jonathan to deliver all the South Western States to the ruling PDP in the last presidential election.

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) however dismissed the  allegation of “playing a role, overtly or covertly to aid the putative victory of the PDP in last Saturday's presidential election, despite the insinuation to that effect”.

Buhari did not disclose details of the deal, which he said the ACN national leader struck with President Jonathan less than one week before the conduct of the 2011 presidential election. But a CPC chieftain, who does not want his name mentioned, said Tinubu pushed for two most strategic appointments in the Federal Executive Council.

According to the chieftain, Tinubu pushed to nominate candidate for Offices of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister for Petroleum Resources. He also opted to nominate ministers in other states of the South West while demanding that President Jonathan should put a stop to all investigations against him.

Buhari asked Tinubu “to stop hiding under false excuses after striking deal with President Jonathan. Tinubu should leave me alone. He has made deal with President Jonathan and delivered. He even lost in his ward to PDP” in a contest he said should have given birth to new Nigeria”.

Buhari described the alleged deal between President Jonathan and Tinubu as a typical replica of what Alliance for Democracy (AD) leaders did in 2003 when the South West “was sold to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The South West leaders are chipping the blame on Late Chief Abraham Adesanya who cannot respond in his grave.

“I can act authoritatively that he sealed the deal with President Jonathan, after which he called a meeting of controlling leaders of the ACN to make them buy into the deal Tinubu struck with President Jonathan,” Buhari said.

However, Buhari commended Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola for rejecting Tinubu’s proposition that the South Western progressives should mobilise for President Jonathan in the presidential election alone.

  • Please help us tell Buhari that we already had in mind Jonathan....so Tinubu would not have come to our doors to sell GEJ to us...He's making too much excuses. Yes, they are all politicians!.but one thing is clear, we voted who we wanted in Lagos.

  • Tinubu is by far a better politician and not in the level Mr.Buhari. If he ever sold the votes of the south West, am still proud of him. He lost in 2007, and did not incite violence and he restrategised for 2011 and this is the result. Mr. should learn a lesson or two from Tinubu and put aside his pride. May God help Nigeria.

  • This allegation must be true as Tinubu is manifestly hungry for Power and the lure of cash. Anyway, some of us will in protest vote out the ACN from Lagos so that Lagosians can truly align with the Government in the center in order to enjoy the dividend of Democracy.

  • I don,t think Tinubu delivered South West to Gej, people in south west have decided to vote Gej for president long before now, Tinubu knows this paradox behaviour in the southwest voters and decided to seize the opportunity for his own benefit, by supporting Gej.
Fashola performance was the key factor in the success of Acn in s/west and the impunity behaviours of Pdp governors in s/west.

  • While I do not know what actually transpired behind the curtains, to me, Buhari and cohorts are displaying signs of a desperate politician. How could Tinubu convince all of west to vote for Jonathan overnight? Now I am not surprised there is chaos in the North because I can imagine what these almajiris are being told in the secret. They probably felt their candidate would have won if not for these manipulations, so they started to fight. I think we are just tired of this generation of wasters that have destroyed our heritage, and they are already dividing the current generation again; the same trump card they used in the first republic. If they want Nigeria to split up, let them tell us. We actually need a sovereign national conference to address this. I hope Jonathan would have the courage to organise one before leaving power.

  • ACN is really a party they know when to strike a deal and when not to, and all guided by there indomitable leader Bola. All hail the sellouts just the thought that another other than themselves will be in power is just disgusting to them and they have chosen to strike a deal to protect their interest to the detriment of those who cannot chose for themselves. we think democracy has won no, persons have won not democracy. Bola has won, ACN has won and JONATHAN has won. DEMOCRACY HAS LOST.

  • Buhari...Buhari...Buhari...stop all these allegations...stop it! Is this how you want to rule Nigeria? With allegations and counter-allegations? What do you expect Tinubu to do at this ward...where everybody waited to count the results after the elections. Do you expect him to walk up to the Youth Corpers and slap them on the face. The press was there...haba Buhari! Why Buhari??? Even in Fashola's polling unit...it was clear, the result was as it was cast by the people. What do you want them to do. Stop all these and play the game. Even in my ward here in Bonny Island, I was there when the votes was counted...CPC scored 1 Vote, ACN 3 and PDP 470 with 29 Invalid Votes. Stop these allegations...there was nothing Tinubu or Fashola could do at their polling units or wards because the people just voted and it was counted right there in the presence of everybody!

  • If Buhari has a problem losing an election, he should simply go to the tribunal. Inciting innocent youths to rampage is unacceptable. At 69, this guy should know when to call it quits. He truncated democracy in 1983, caned people on the street of Lagos in the name of WAI, why does he think anyone but his deep north cronies will want him back in power? The southwest is the most enlightened, courtesy of Awolowo's free education since 1955, a feat no other region has been able to achieve. Tinubu cannot influence my vote. I voted Jonathan, he is the most credible and humble of the lot. No sharia in Nija. I am voting Fashola next Tuesday. Please retire to your Daura home and leave Nija alone. We have GEJ for another 4 years.

  • Gen. Buhari will NEVER stop giving reasons why he will always lose elections. How could Tinibu single handedly influence the entire South West just under one-week.? The Yorubas, in the south west, including other southerners are better enlightened than my northern brothers/sisters.BUHARI SHOULD FOR ONCE GIVE UP POLITICS, HE CAN NEVER WIN ANY ELECTION IN NIGERIA.

  • Olufemi, how can you believe such nonsense ? Are you saying you don't have a mind of your own like the rest of the SouthWest? We're too politically matured for anybody to direct us on who to vote for. I personally wanted to vote Buhari but voted Ribadu because I lost hope after the outcome of the NASS elections in the North. I'm now glad I did'nt vote for Buhari, he's a sore looser and not a statesman. As for the governorship elections, even if you transport all the Almajeris from the north to Lagos to vote CPC or PDP, FASHOLA will still win. Live with it.

  • Even if Buhari had won Lagos State, through an alliance with the ACN, that would not have given him the presidency because, Buhari lost in all the States in the South West. Tinubu has nothing to do with the way Nigerians voted for Jonathan. Hopefully, Jonathan can now do better for the country.

  • Someone has said that Buhari's bigotry, naivety and self-righteousness make him TOTALLY UNPREPARED to govern a 21st century nation like Nigeria thirsty for sustainable development and a respected place in the comity of nations. Even if it doesn't sound stupid and illogical to him and his gullible admirers and heartless "butchers", Buhari ought to know that Tinubu is ACN while he is founder and sole administrator of CPC. Assuming Tinubu could "force" S.W. and Edo people to vote and vote Jonathan, what business of Buhari is that? Tell us, General Buhari, Tony Momoh, Odumakin, et al; was it Tinubu that made the entire S.E., Kwara, Kogi, Nasarawa, FCT, etc. to vote for Jonathan? If that election was conducted again today, Buhari would surely perform more woefully; even if he called out all the almagiris in the world. At 69, this general should be wiser!

  • comments such as those made by Buhari were responsible for the post election crisis that we have experienced in some parts of the North, and I hope as an elder states man, he should apologise rather than blame Tinubu for the defeat he suffered in the election. Nigerians voted for GEJ because they believed he has what it takes to move this country forward.
