 Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd)

By  Chuks Okocha and Onyebuchi Ezigbo

Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) Thursday became the first aspirant to publicly declare his interest in the 2015 presidential election, putting an end to speculations on his retirement from active politics.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged the opposition to a public debate on the state of the nation following the celebration of 13 years of democratic rule last Tuesday.

Buhari, who contested in the presidential elections in 2003, 2007 and 2011 and came second on each occasion, has rescinded his decision not to contest again.

Addressing the media Thursday, he said he would be presenting himself to the party and the Nigerian people again in three years’ time.

He said: “I broke down in tears last year during my campaign. The last time I ever broke down in tears was when I was addressing troops which I commanded during the civil war (1967-70).

“Having seen how rich this country is and how God really blessed Nigeria, the whole world is almost envious of Nigeria for what we have… land for farming, solid minerals, petroleum.  I think God has given us so much and then I saw how most Nigerians cannot afford to educate their children, most of them cannot afford proper medical care and most of them cannot get drinking water. Go and find out how much we have earned between 1999 and now and how many schools we have built in the country. Where did the money go?

“When I was going to contest election last year, I said that after the elections, I would not submit myself to election in 2015, but then also said I would remain a party man but would not vie for posts.  However, since then, it has been like hell was let loose… members of my party, associates, individually and as groups, put pressure on me.  There is a certain group of party members who asked me whether I will rescind my decision. I told them it was up to the party. They clapped and said I must run. I have withdrawn my decision not to run.”

The presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in last year’s election, who recently caused a stir when he spoke about bloodshed if the 2015 elections are rigged, criticised party members who recently said they had expelled some national leaders from the party.

“It is just not legally possible. The National Executive Council of CPC were elected according to the constitution of the party for a four-year term and according to the constitution and the Electoral Act, to my understanding, nobody in this country can remove this executive till the next four years until the next convention.  So how can any group come and constitute themselves into the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and dismiss the executive of the party?” he asked.

On his assessment of the one of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, the former Head of State said:  “I think we are reversing because of the situation in the petroleum industry and I and you have watched the hearing on the probe conducted by the National Assembly and I am sure you know about the pension scam. Nigerians who worked for 30 and 35 years were dying while some people formed a syndicate stealing billions of naira of pensioners’ money.  The culprits are now on bail and they will start looking for way out.”

But apparently due to the poor rating by opposition political parties on the state of the nation, the PDP has challenged the opposition parties to a series of public debate on issues of national development and project inspection, to compare achievements, instead of engaging in “unconstructive criticism on the pages of newspapers”.

The party, in blaming the opposition parties of deceit and playing to the gallery, said the economy grew by 7.45 per cent in 2011, stating that as at mid-May 2012, the foreign exchange reserves had risen to $37.02 billion, the highest level in 21 months.

According to the National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, Jonathan’s Democracy Day address to the nation had chronicled the giant strides taken by the PDP led government in all sectors of the nation’s life, stating however that as the president is doing all that is humanly possible to ensure stability within the polity, the opposition leaders are constantly sowing seeds of discord.

Reiterating what the President said on the Democracy Day, the PDP said, “One of the sectors that the PDP government has taken as top priority is the power sector. We have finished the repair of all our power plants. We are accelerating the completion of the National Integrated Power Projects. By mid 2010, the national power output was about 2, 800 MW. By the end of 2011, we reached a peak of more than 4, 000 MW. We are also building about 4000km of transmission lines and hundreds of sub stations. We have completed the design for the construction of both Mambila and Zungeru Hydro power plants which will add about 3, 000 MW to the national grid.”

  • My candid advice to Buhari is, please raise your son or daughter if you have any for the post. You are no more fit for this job. Just rest. You are my father, and i dont see any reason you will deprive me from contesting. Failing to allow me the job shows you are irresponsible at this old age. Please, just go and rest. Why will you be asking for death at this old age, when we are looking forward to keeping you home to give you a helping hand. For God's sake do not contest. It is enough

  • I think this is too early, Mallam el Rufai said "Buhari is unelectable", Buhari should have tried solving that equation before presenting himself again for election. Obviously there are alot of internal politics going on in CPC, so many interests too. CPC should sit down together as a party and choose a credible and electable candidate if they want to win the next election, that is what ACN is currently doing.

He is not putting his house the CPC in order. He thinks he can threaten Nigeria into making him the next president, what a joke; his own people will stab him in the back. This is not the president Nigeria wants from the north, , there are so many progressive leaders from the north, not his autocratic military grandfather.

He is no longer focus, honest, faithful and truthful,he is already a confused man, they are misleading him and has no honest people around him to tell him the truth and where he belong in Nigeria,he is not ashame of himself again. • I am sick and tired of this usual line of "I reverse my words because ...members of my party, associates, individually and as groups, put pressure on me".
Albeit, it is only God's word that never change, but some humans (statesmen, opinion and political leaders as well as patriots) should rise to a station where their words should be backed by corresponding actions. Honestly I share the same view as Justice's, but as a more subtle advise to an elder statesman as I see our dear General Buhari.

  • Must Buhari be the president of Nigeria to make any serious impact on the state of things in Nigeria? What we need in Nigeria are strong institutions, not a super strong president. As rightly pointed out by Buhari that suspects in the pension scam and other shameful sleazes secure bail from our courts, I advice Buhari to contest for a seat in the House of representatives or Senate and help make sure that the lapses we have in laws, especially that which allows for bail in cases of corruption are reviewed and expunged. That will be a good start for him. For now, Nigerians don't trust Buhari as he is seen as an Islamic jihadist. He may never be there even after a hundred attempts without earning the trust of Nigerians..

You have forgotten to tell Nigerians of the infamous scandal that occurred in that ministry where under your watch billions of naira (in the 1970s) were reported stolen, a matter which led to the setting up of the Justice Ayo Irikefe panel.Of course, you have also failed to tell Nigerians why those who overthrew your regime did that only when 'Idiagbon' was outside- could it be that they knew you were too weak to resist them? Why should innocent youth corpers and many others be made to die because some one lost his presidential election bid? Has anyone heard of Buhari's children or even relations being killed as a result of presidential election violence? If no, then Nigerians, we need to learn our lessons and let no body continue to fool us.Retire honourably General Buhari,Give the younger ones the opportunity to come on board. .

For God's sake what on earth does he want to achieve in Nigerian democracy he once forbid by overthrowing a democratically elected president Shagari. Does he think Nigerians will forget easily how he instigated violence in the North after he lost the 2011 election and the number of innocent people that lost their lives because of his selfish ambition. Now he has started threatening violence and killing in 2015. let him sacrifice his children for violence in 2015 instead of using the gullible Almajiris and the uneducated islamists in the North. • What is wrong wit us in Nigeria? is age, tribe or religion we use to vote in a candidate in Nigeria. Let us wake up and fight our common enemies (the looters - PDP). The leader we need in Nigeria is a leader that does not have God-father or friends that he will want to protect in corruption issues. This man, Buhari has done it before with WAI (War Against Indiscipline) and all Nigerians above 30yrs of age could testify to the success of this scheme then. We need a leader that is not corrupt. Please let us leave age and tribe aside and think of development together.

Note that this man was ejected out of his rented apartment in Abuja some months ago while others have minimum of 5 mansions in abuja out stolen money. let us wake up and put this man there to fight our common enemies ones and for all. We need iron hand to deal with this thieves. my pastor once told me not to vote for this man last election without meaningful reason other than he is not a christian but bullshit him for that. The pastor is leaving large in mansion, exotic cars and children schooling abroad while we common pple face hell. let us be wise for once and do what is right. My advise is that those people do not wish him well and they are ready to do anything to use him as a stepping stone towards the realization of their own selfish goals and at the detriment of the man Buhari. My humble advise to the north if they are desirous and ready to occupy that seat in 2015, Buhari can never be the one that will make that come to pass. • Buhari has done no wrong to this nation. what ever angle you want to look at him from he is a a sincere man. if you say he is a Muslim then ask yourself ,what have Nigerians benefited from the hands of christian rulers? he will perform better than OBJ, let us give him a trial.

  • Fellow nigerians, lets be sincere to ourselves. do we want progress for this country or not. do we want all this suffering to continue. Please lets try Buhari if he is the one that will move this country forward. some people expressed the same sentiments before the last election and they are complaining about every move of the present government now. if general Buhari is the answer , why not. lets bury the sentiments.

Buhari will be as good as obj and not the likes of......................................... you know them.do not insult him.

  • Buhari!!! you seem to be sincere but i would suggest if this will ever get to you. if you want to win 2015 election, stop criticizing and then help the security situation which i know, you know the origin. Tell the Boko Haram Islamic Sects to put down their guns and stop the killing. campaign for peace instead of bloodshed and all that if you want to succeed in 2015. I cannot remember any foundation in this country where you have been helping people (the less privilege) and you want to rule Nigeria. pls just think about this. you are too aggressive in your words. be soft so you can win peoples heart and i don't always understand what you are saying, try and speak good English. And if you love this country as you claim. you must let go this presidency thing and support the government. thanks.

  • Buhari ko Buhari ni! What are you looking for I ask in my mind not on your pone.

Does Buhari think that Nigerians are suffering from collective amnesia to soon forget the gladiatorial bloodshed that was perpetrated in the North on his behalf and in his honour just a little over a year ago? Now he is threatening to kill and maim if he is not made the president.
How could someone hoping to be the president threaten to kill and be socked in blood should things not go his own way. That is pure unpatriotic, unethical, unbecoming, irresponsible, uncultured and to crude an attitude to be found in any president. I laugh at those who says that Buhari is not corrupt, what about the petroleum ministry scandal where under your watch billions were sniffed out away in the 1970s? what about the Justice Ayo Irikefe panel? What about the innocent youth corpers? Im thinking about the fleets of briefcase loaded with millions in the wharf that were shipped out under your administration? Atiku Abubakar understands what Im talking about. What else is corruption?

Does Buhari think that he can coerce or threaten Nigerians into making him the president? No sir!
I see in Buhari greed and selfishness, and a determination to carry out his fanatical and sectional agenda and ambitions which is not in the interest of the polity.

    Nigeria be warned!

  • In honesty, I feel he has good intentions for this country, but unfortunately the system is so messed up that given the opportunity to rule this country he will not achieve much. I see the zeal in him to fight corruption which is holding this country hostage, but he should remember this is not a military system where his words will be law of the land. Whom is going to fight with; the national assembly? the judiciary? the law enforcement? his Cabinet members?, his party big wigs? his brothers and sisters? market women? Just mention anything in Nigeria that Nigerians are involved is CORRUPTION. For a decent man or woman to rule Nigeria, the person will not last, the person will die from heart attack before the cabals will even get to him/her. My brother, if you feel you can do it, go ahead but remember age is no more on your side. I will always pray for God to do something in our land to alleviate the human suffering created by fellow human beings in Nigeria

He is a hypocrite. Be assured that you will be gone down and down in your desperation to come back. You will never rule Nigeria again. I decree it.

  • I do not believe that General Buhari deserves to rule Nigeria, this is frankness and a humble opinion.
Certain of his utterances are in gross conflict with democratic ideals, repels the public rather than attracts them.
How could a man who desires to ascend and lead his people, consciously call for their heads, and imply, blood spillage.Whose blood would he want spilled, if he actually stated that 'blood must flow'.
I will be the last man to cast my vote for such a person or persons who may engage in such mean utterances.
If dare him to secure for pages in the media and make apologies to the Nation if he has the courage.
He only came to prominence by the grace of a military coup, and not by any charismatic means. He can not win,and he can not rule;we must standup to tell aspiring rulers the blunt truth, if the Nation must get better.

And please did the Irikefe Panel indict Buhari and find him guilty of anything? Does anyone have the report of this Panel? Can we put it up on the Internet?

Even Obasanjo can't escape it. My advice to all criminals and corrupt politicians and their agent writing rubbish about our incoming President of Nigeria is that start packing your bags, your days are numbered. Heaven has accepted Buhari presidency, whether you like it or not so shall it be. (amen)

  • Just as we are putting pressure on President Jonathan to honor his promise not to seek a 2nd term in office, Buhari too should respect his promise not to seek elective post after 2011. It is a terrible development that our Leaders always feel they can tell Nigerians something and turn around to do the exact opposite. We should always make our Leaders responsible enough to keep their words otherwise we destroy our value of integrity

  • As far as i am concerned Buhari is desperate to become the president because he wants to go back to loot the money he didn't have the opportunity to loot during his autocratic and devilish military regime. he was chased out of power unexpectedly, so he couldn't steal much money then. he wants to by all means go back to Aso Rock and loot enough money for his generation. secondly, he is a islamic fanatic, he will turn this country into an islamic state. to hell with Buhari, your time has expired.old fool!

I think sincerely without leaning on any sentiment, that Buhari is capable of pulling us out of this mess we are in. let the truth be told no matter how bitter it may sound to the rulling party, they have failed us completly.

Also I will advise Buhari the BOKOHARAM underdog to put his ambition aside and belief that the game is clearly over for him as he is no more relevant in political game again in Nigeria

  • Gen.Buhari can no longer be trusted. I supported and voted for him at the last elections but his integrity has become doubtful. What manner of man has he become? Here was somebody whose word was his bond and he commanded respect all over. Having lost the elections he instigated riots through his unguarded utterances which led to the murder of many innocent corpers. That was where my support ended for him. He is now threatening blood and fire in 2015, three clear years to the next election. Is this not premature ambition and isn't he really getting too old for this position? Please sir, heed the warnings and signs now. You will lose the next elections again and you will regret it because it might take you to an early grave .Give way for the younger generation please. This is over ambition.

  • I honestly beleive that PDP has failed Nigerians in every ramifications of life but i still does not buy the idea of General Buhari contesting again 2015. I think he should be a statesman instead of contesting all the time, does it mean CPC does not have men of virtue and vision that BUHARI has to be the only annointed candidate of CPC. He has the future and development of Nigeria at heart if i should judge by his statements that i have taking time to read always on news papers but i think there are some young and vibrant men that can do the same good job he wish with his sincere and honest advise without him been the president or did he have a secret beat with OBJ that after military i will rule also in democracy. I appriciate his love for Nigeria but i doubt if his children and grandchildren value and wish him well that they always allow him to contest. If indeed his party members are insisting he should contest i think he should rather be a man of repute by refusing to dabble his life and reputation into something that is already tarnishing and bastardizing his image. Jonathan you have really not done well, each time you want to address Nigerians keep you saying we are planing to do, we are planing to do, does it mean the Nigeria you know is only good on dreams? why not for heaven sake tell us for once you have done this and have done this instead of work is in progress, this one is about to start, one year has gone by without you telling us you have done this or that instead the same you are planing to do you said during your campaign that is same lanaguage you are using after 1 full year in office. I know God is watching and i know he will surely judge every one according to his deeds, you guys should know heaven is real and hell is as well real for bible said of what shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and loses his soul. If you are dead you will not know how your children is spending your ill gotten wealth and as far as i have political ambition in this country i will make sure within my jurisdiction to ensure that OGJ and current president in death your names are not in anyway immortalized. You guys has cause Nigerians more pain than God but let God be the judge as i leave you all to your conscience. God save Nigeria.

Buhari, you disgusted this nation with your unguided words and fake tears. Even when Corpers were killed, you did not come publicly to speak against it. The Innocent blood of those who lost their lives because you failed will find you. YOU still have the guts to speak of Bloodbirth in 2015 and now, to contest in 2015? Be warned!
