Brymo

Ashimi Olawale otherwise known as Brymo is an award winning singer from the Chocolate City label. The dark-hued artiste shot to public reckoning a few years back after nearly a decade of trying to ride to stardom. In a recent encounter with LANRE ODUKOYA,
he spoke about his life and career

I WAS MORE INTERESTED IN
FOOTBALL …

As at 2002, I was in my final year in secondary school and I was definitely not ready. I had very little knowledge about the trade and there were not many teen stars back then. It’s a career, so the first thing I had to decide within the first few years was if I really wanted it, because that would mean throwing everything else into second place. Music was however the second profession to catch my interest. I wanted to play football. I am a lefty so it was quite easy to get people thinking I’m unique. But music is the only thing I ever invested in.

MY MUSIC STYLE…
It’s not actually Fuji hip hop as many think. Music in our time has become more multi-genre than before. All over the world, artistes are fusing two or more sounds to create music. I have a lot of Fuji in my music. My parents played a lot of Juju Music as well. I have some rock influence in there and of course, rhythm and blues plus a lot of pop. In fact I’m not quite sure what the genre is these days.

MY CHOCOLATE CITY STORY …
It was like an opportunity meets preparation kind of situation for me. I didn’t know anyone at Chocolate City before 2010. Everything happened so fast. Sometimes, I still wonder if that’s not a miracle.

NEW ALBUM…
The Album is my sophomore and it will be released on November 15 online but it will be on the streets by the end of the month. It’s called “TheSonOfaKapenta” and it contains songs from my experience and stories I picked up on the way. I hope first of all, that people will like the album because this will help my career grow.

OTHER EFFORTS FOR 2013…
For the first quarter of 2013, I’ll be working on promotions for the album and also on my concert. So, hopefully by April 2013, Brymo will be live in concert. I can’t wait.

PALS AT CHOC CITY...
I am closer to Jesse Jagz. We live in the same house anyway.

COLLABORATIONS…
I have a few other collaborations outside Chocolate City and I’m looking forward to doing more as time goes on. In 2013, I’ll definitely like to do some more, here at home and even outside the country. Currently, I have appeared on songs with 2shotz, Sasha, five mics and others. I have a song with Yung Six that’s yet to be released.

FASCINATION IN MUSIC…
It has to be the melody. It fascinates me. I like to say that my mum influenced my career the most. I remember when I was quite younger; she would play around with a lot of Fuji or Juju Music tunes. She would take out lyrics from a song and puts hers there. Usually, she makes the songs for her husband, my dad. So whenever he got angry, she would sing to him. I like to think that I got a lot of my song-writing influence from her. But generally for me, it’s the sound of the song itself that gets to me. So, I listen to every artiste I come across, who knows where the next inspiration might spring from?

MY PARENTS’ REACTION TO MY CAREER …
My dad didn’t want to hear about it, but my mum was worried about how it might affect my life. Most parents feel that way because of the vices attached to the business. But after a while when you start to show your competence, they start to accept the success. Everyone likes success. So, just like most other parents, my dad fought me for years about it. I am glad I am making him proud now.

AWARD AT THE HEADIES…
I definitely wanted more than I got, but then, I got what I deserved. I believe in years to come, I’ll get more and more awards.

MY GREATEST FEARS…
I am afraid of losing touch with my music. The fame tends to always want to snatch the work. When you start to spend more time performing, traveling too, one has to take out time to know what music around the globe is sounding like. That way, you stay in touch. So I’m usually traveling with music in my pocket.

PLAN B OUTSIDE MUSIC…
When I get to that bridge, I’ll cross it.

MOST TRYING TIME…
That would be in 2009. My video for the song “shawdy” from my first album was already out and a lot of my friends were already treating me like a star, even though I was still living with my folks and could hardly buy my own clothes. I had to depend on a few people like my best friend who made sure I stayed with the plan. He would let me stay in his house and eat his food.At a certain point, I felt embarrassed that another man was being responsible for my welfare. The break came in 2010 when Denrele called and asked me to put a call through to MI, a few months later, Chocolate City happened.

REGRETS SO FAR…
No regrets, I love my life.
