Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas, Mr Femi Otedola, yesterday restated his earlier request to the  House Committee on Ethics and Privileges to conduct the ongoing investigations into the $620,000 bribery scandal in the open.
Otedola  said the demand to conduct the investigation in the full glare of the media and the general public was to erase suspicion and  avoid misrepresentation of facts in the testimonies  of witnesses.

The clarification came  on the heels of some media reports credited to a member of the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Hon Ibrahim Bello, on what transpired when Otedola appeared before the committee last week.
In a statement released by his  solicitor, Mr Babajide Koku (SAN), Otedola denied claims by the lawmaker that he confessed to the panel that he had no video clips of his transactions with Hon Farouk Lawan.

The statement read thus: “Our client’s attention has been drawn to the statement credited to Hon. Ibrahim Bello, a member of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
This statement was published on Monday 9th July, 2012 in the Guardian Newspapers under the caption “Rep claims Otedola has no video-clip on $620,000 bribe” and the Nation Newspapers under the caption: ‘Otedola denied giving out Lawan’s tape, says Rep.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state categorically that the statement credited to Hon. Ibrahim Bello is entirely false and calculated to misrepresent and misinform the public as to what transpired during the closed door hearing held by the House Committee on the 3rd of July, 2012.

“We wish to state further, that there are video and audio recordings corroborating our client’s account of what that transpired between him and Hon. Farouk Lawan.

“It is pertinent to emphasise that our Client at no time during the proceedings of the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges denied the authenticity of the audio recordings broadcasted by the media but only stated that he was not the one that gave the audio recordings to the media houses.”

“This further gives credence to our clients believe that it is in the interest of truth and justice that any hearing into the allegation of bribery against Hon. Farouk Lawan must be held in public and in an unbiased and transparent manner,” said Koku.

  • Otedola is one very crafty man that if you are not scared of then you can not be scared of anything else in Life.what is the essence of this fight? to hide what he has stolen from NIgerians? even if Farouk is guilty, let Otedola should present the video and let Farouk be punished but let him equally return the stolen money.

  • i wonder why the House is insisting on secret hearing when this concerns all of us Nigerians. These people who overpay themselves and want to protect their members by all means should not be allowed to get away with this secret hearing.

  • would honorable Ibrahim Bello back down from his high horse and enjoins his fellow lawmakers to do just the honorable thing of conducting their investigation in full glare of the public and not be judges in their secret kangaroo court.Meanwhile, Nigerians should be ready for a showdown with the power that be if anything tragic should happen to Otedola and the audio visual evidence he has to collaborate his facts and accusation. Let Lawan and his cohorts (who are trying to cover up as the money have exchanged hands within the house)

  • Honestly I don't understand the reason behind dragging of this issue, why on earth will the committee insist on secret investigation if they dont have any skeleton on there cupboard, please they should spare Nigerians and allow this case go public so whoever erred will be brought to book. Enough is enough!

  • OK you guys can stop now. I guess that those who did not want the probe into the murky oil and gas world in Nigeria have had their wish come true. No one believes any side anymore and the report is compromised. And Nigerians are turning their attention to their daily struggles and difficulties. There is now an increased mistrust of leaders and those who govern us within this 'cut and paste' democracy. But remember, the law of karma - those who by collusion or commission cause the country to be in this sorry state cannot escape the effects of their actions. After all, do your children not have to now school abroad, when sick, do you not have to fly abroad for treatment, can you be sure when travelling within Nigeria either by road or air you will arrive at your destination, are you safe? Even though you try, you cannot create a separate Nigeria from the one you cause to be on its knees. Rich or poor, arrogant or hopeless, we are all in it together

  • Is Otedola a clean person too? Let' trace his money, how did he start? All these money he claim to have came from government. And that is why he' on of the major sponsor of PDP, we can from here see that he is one of the problems in the country. He is now been used by executive to rubbish house of Assembly. And if he is honorable, why should he be involved in the dirty "sting operation" he claimed? Can he swear that his money is clean? Can he swear that he has never giving bribe to people. How did he become major importer of diesel in the country?

  • Who is investigating Farouk? We should not be fooled. Farouk is not acting alone. The money might have been shared by some house members. They will all they can to cover up. All they do is to share money. Do we need them?

  • Video and audio recordings will simply go to prove the stand of Hon. Farouk that he accepted the money to prove the bribery by attaching it with his complaint. No Nigerian has ever returned such big money like that before. Nigerians simply fail to accept that there could be someone so honest as Hon.Farouk Lawan among them.

  • All these prance are been played by men with wife and children who will one day want their children to emulate their foot steps. By following their father's foot steps, we lead to the multiplication of more sophisticated looters and fraud stars. This war against corruption that we have been glamoring for should first of all start from our homes where parents will lead the way, after which it will be taken to our streets, and then to the corridors of power.
