A bout 70 men suspected to be members of the notorious Boko Haram group in the early hours of Friday attacked a police station, a police barrack and a bank in Damboa town, about 80 kilometres from Maiduguri the Borno State capital.
The attack, which lasted for hours, saw hoodlums using explosives on the police station, police barracks, and First Bank branch in the town and killed an unspecified number of policemen and civilians during the incident.
It was learnt that the station and the barrack were badly damaged by the bombs and a vehicle parked in the premises of the bank was reportedly taken away by the religious fundamentalists.
It was learnt that throughout the duration of the attack, the economic and social life of the town was brought to a stand still as residents scampered for their lives.
When contacted, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed confirmed the attack, describing it as unfortunate. He said it was as a "black Friday" for the Borno State Police Command.
He disclosed that unspecified numbers of police officers were killed during the attack on Damboa Police Station and barracks and the branch of First Bank in the town, adding that he was on his way to Damboa to assess the situation on ground.
