Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Hon. Goni Ali Modu, was Thursday removed for being  “too subservient”  to the state executive arm of government.

Goni who had being the Speaker since 2003 had presided over three sessions. He is representing Abadam state constituency.

He was immediately replaced by the member representing Guzamala state constituency, Hon. Abdulkareem Lawan Adam, who was unanimously adopted by the 21 members in attendance after he was nominated by Honorable Audu Mustapha of Magumeri state constituency.

Former Speaker, Goni Ali Modu, over eight years reign was terminated when one Hon. Ayamu Lawan Gwasha, representing Damboa state constituency moved a motion for the dissolution of the office of the Speaker and that of the Deputy Speaker for not being accessible to members and for too subservient to the State Governor, Kashim Shettima.

Goni Ali Modu, a one-time chairman of Northern Speakers’ Forum, said the impeachment came to many as a surprise as he appeared to be in total control of the assembly.

The removal was unceremonial as he was not at the sitting that impeached.

He came on board about nine years ago after the impeachment of two of his predecessors that served for a short periods of six months and one week respectively. He was almost impeached during his second four-year tenure but was saved by former Governor Ali Sheriff, when his colleagues rose against him in 2010.
