A small Improvised Explosive Device (IED) allegedly placed inside a gutter adjacent the Army Barracks, Bukavu in Kano exploded on Wednesday night.

The incident, which took place near the Dantata shopping complex, happened at about 9 pm. Initial reports indicated that no one was hurt by the blast.

According to an eye witness, although there were no casualties, resident of the area were thrown into panic as a result of the explosion.

Spokesman of the joint Military task force (JTF) Lieutenant Ikedichi Iweha, who confirmed the incident, said: “the explosion occurred adjacent to the army barracks in Bukavu. The explosive device was placed inside a gutter. However, there were no injuries because nobody was around the immediate vicinity at that time.”

Soldiers have since cordoned off the scene of the explosion barring civilians from staying around the area.

It was learnt that commercial activities immediately ceased as traders nearby the barrack shut shops while the road became deserted with both commercial and private cars staying away from the area for their own safety.
