Vice-Chairman of Senate Committee on Niger Delta Affairs,  Senator Nurudeen Abatemi Usman, has called on  the people of Kogi State and Nigerians to eschew violence  in the interest of peace and unity of the country.

He noted that the incessant senseless killing of innocent Nigerians as a way of expressing grievances would not take the people anywhere, saying that dialogue must be sought as the best option in the expression of grievances.

Abatemi-Usman, who is representing  Kogi Central Senatorial district in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Michael Jegede, congratulated Nigerians on the celebration of the New Year 2013.

The Senator stated that it was only with the total entrenchment of peace, love and unity amongst the people that the country can achieve the desired growth and development in the country.

Abatemi-Usman, who  called on government to take proactive steps in tackling the general insecurity problem in the country, made a passionate appeal to those involved in the wanton killing of innocent citizens to have a rethink and embrace dialogue, which according to him was the best approach in conflict resolution.

While stressing the need for Nigerians to be prayerful more than ever before, the Senator said: “I congratulate Nigerians for the opportunity given to us by God Almighty to witness the year 2013.

“As we commence the New Year, we need carry on, in all facets of our life, the basic lesson of God’s consciousness through mutual and neighbourliness, love, selflessness and righteousness which are, indeed, the virtues for nation building. We must endeavour to always be our brothers’ keeper. It is only via sincere love and affection for one another that we can continue to live in harmony and unity, and open the door for steady growth and development.”
