Bauchi State House of Assembly has suspended its only female member, Rifkatu Samson Danna, who represents Bogoro constituency. Danna was said to have been suspended for acts bordering on misconduct. Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Dayyabu Chiroma, disclosed during the weekend that the decision to suspend her sequel to the recommendation of an ad-hoc committee set up to investigate uncomplimentary remarks that she had allegedly made and for which she was asked to render an apology in writing.
Danna was accused of making uncomplimentary remarks against the other members of the Assembly when the house approved the relocation of the headquarters of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area to Bununu last February. The relocation had followed constant unrests in the area that made it difficult for government to make any developmental efforts.
Danna was said to have accused the members of taking a decision outside the House of Assembly before presenting it at the floor of the Assembly for mere adoption, an accusation that did not go down well with the other members of the house. However, after reading the content of the apology letter submitted to the house by Danna, the legislators rejected the letter saying that it contained nothing but an insult to the entire members. They decided to suspend her for “misconduct to the House.”
Abdulkadir Dewu, representing Alkaleri constituency, moved the motion for the suspension of Danna, saying that her letter of apology was rude and showed no remorse for her action. Based on the secondment of the motion, the members voted in favour of the suspension of the female member and the speaker, Yahaya Mohammed Miya, directed the clerk of the house to communicate the punishment to her.
Reacting to her suspension, Danna accepted the verdict of the Assembly, saying that she took the decision to present the letter in an effort to protect the interest of her constituency.
