The 26th edition of the First Bank Hard Court Championships ended over the weekend with Babalola Abdulmumini defeating Shehu Lawal to win the prestigious men title.
The final which drew a capacity crowd was keenly contested but ended with the more experienced Babalola beating Lawal.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Babalola thanked God for giving him the grace to round up the season with a title; he also used the occasion to thank his coach, friends and well wishers for their supports.
Babalola also thanked the sponsor of the championship: First Bank, urging the bank to continue its support for the Championship, “First Bank’s sponsorship has made a lot of difference and I hope they will continue to support and back us.”
In the finals of the women event, Fatimah Abinu defeated Blessing Sam.
Lawal, who lost the men’s title to Babalola did not go home empty handed, he paired with Danladi Idoko to defeat the duo of Sunday Maku and Chuwkwu Abbah to win the men’s double title.
Speaking during this edition of the tournament, the Organising Secretary of the championship, Yusuf Datti thanked the management of First Bank for the sponsorship.
“The Dala Hard Court is a prestigious championship and also historical. Dala is the name of famous hills around Kano, during the period when there were pyramids in Kano; they were referred to as Dala.
“We are grateful to First Bank for their continued support; the relationship has been mutually beneficial. We hope they will continue to support us,” said Datti.
