The street where the tragic incident happened

A baby being carried by her mother as she crossed the road has had a miraculous escape after the woman was killed - by a bus carrying her other daughter back from a school trip, reports Sky News.

Mijin Shin, 38, was killed when she was struck at an intersection in north Sydney, Australia.

She was carrying her 11-month-old baby girl, who was hurled out of her arms but incredibly escaped injury.

The woman died at the scene, police later confirmed.

The bus was carrying students from Beecroft Primary School , returning from an excursion.

Ms Shin was due to meet the bus to pick up her pre-teen daughter and take her home.

"The 11-year-old daughter of the deceased lady, the mother, was on the bus with other school children," police duty officer Darren Jameson said.

"Fortunately, she didn't see the incident but she was on the bus."

'It's a tragic day, not only for the family but for the witnesses and the bystanders."

Police later interviewed the 69-year-old bus driver, who was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

The students were offered counselling and the bus seized for forensic examinations.

Local residents left floral tributes at the intersection for Ms Shin.
