Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu
The former Head of State and the national leader of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) Wednesday met with top leaders of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) at his private residence in Kaduna.
Those on the ANPP delegation included, the National Chairman, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, National Secretary, Alhaji Musa Tunsa and former Governor of Kano State and chairman of the party’s contact committee on alliance talks, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau.
Although the ANPP said its leaders were merely on a condolence visit to Buhari who lost his first daughter recently, the actual motive was to use the opportunity to court the support of the CPC leader in the ongoing opposition merger talks.
THISDAY gathered from sources at the Buhari camp that the closed-door meeting with the ANPP leaders lasted about 20 minutes with the party leaders beaming with smiles as they were leaving.
ANPP National Secretary had said that the party will not hesitate to throw its support behind the former Head of State.
He told THISDAY in an interview that the party will back Buhari if he emerges the best candidate of the coalition because he was a competent man for the job.
“If you recall, Buhari was once a candidate of the ANPP, it is not about assumption, it is about ANPP providing a platform for any candidate. We are looking for candidates to come forward if they are good for the country. What we know for sure is that we will not take incompetent person to fly the flag of ANPP. ANPP is good platform for people of substance including Buhari to run for Presidency in order to achieve what Nigerians are seeking as an alternative to the directionless government of the PDP,” he said.
