The preparations of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the November 16 Anambra State governorship election, has run into a hitch as the chairman of the campaign committee, Senator Annie Okonkwo, Thursday disassociated himself from the party's candidate, Senator Chris Ngige.

Okonkwo, who had earlier withdrawn from the governorship primaries to back Ngige, wrote to the National Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande, saying he was no longer interested in leading the campaign team for Ngige in the gubernatorial election.

"I write to appreciate you my national chairman and indeed the interim national executive committee on my appointment as the chairman/ campaign coordinator of the national campaign committee for the Anambra governorship election come November 26. It is really commendable and appreciated but wishes to regrettably decline the appointment and also disassociate myself from the candidature of our flag bearer, Senator Chris Ngige," he said.

Okonkwo, who is also the party's Deputy National Chairman (South), said he was declining his appointment to coordinate the party's campaign for the state election due to the failure of Ngige to keep to an agreement between them.

Okonkwo in a letter addressed to Akande and dated September 18, said was declining his appointment to serve as the campaign coordinator for Ngige.

Governor Rochas  Okorocha,  while presenting Ngige as the consensus candidate of the APC for the Anambra election, had said his choice would unite all the segments of the population in the state.

However, Okonkwo said he could no longer work with Ngige because the governorship candidate had failed to appreciate his sacrifice for stepping down for him.
"My decision was borne out of inability to keep to the agreement and flagrant distrust and abuses by our standard bearer who of course showed no appreciation for the supreme sacrifice  of stepping down for him. As a party, I remain committed and loyal to our great party," he said.

APC National Chairman had on September 5, appointed Okonkwo as the chairman and campaign coordinator of the state governorship election for the party.

Okonkwo, who represented the people of Anambra Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011, was expected to work  as chairman the Anambra election campaign committee along with four APC governors including Rochas Okorocha, Rauf Aregbesola, Adams Oshiomhole and Tanko Al-Makura.
