Anambra Cricket Coach, Chike Okoye, has blamed his side’s loss to Lagos State at the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival on the poor standard of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) pitch.

Anambra Tuesday batted 26.2 overs for 75 runs all out to lose to Lagos who batted 15.2 overs for 77 runs and three wickets.

Okoye told NAN after the match that the poor condition of the pitch affected his players.

“The pitch is bad and it affected the efforts of my players because they are not used to it.

“Although we lost, it was an honourable defeat for us because we did not lose woefully," he said.

He added that he expected the team to bounce back in their next game against Imo State which, he said, was also a good side as well.

One of the batsmen for Anambra, Ifechelobi Echezona, told NAN that he was not happy about their loss and attributed it to fear.

“Honestly, nobody is happy when he loses so that is how we feel right now.

“And I believe it was because we had fear for so many things considering the fact that it was the host state we were playing against.

“This resulted in our carelessness with our wickets,’’ Echezona said.

He also complained about the pitch which, he noted, was undulating. The batsman said that he hoped they would win their next game against Imo State so as to have a chance in the competition.

In his reaction, the Coach of Lagos State team, Endurance Ofem, said that they were glad about their victory but would not be distracted by it.

“We will just take each game as they come because this is just our first game," Ofem said.

NAN reports that there are two medals to be clinched in cricket, the T-20 and One Day International (ODI) and both are played on round rubbing basis.

Earlier, at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Cricket Oval, Team Kaduna walked over Team Gombe.
