The Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi, has been appointed into the advisory board of the Global Electricity Initiatives (GEI) which is expected to provide support that will drive the implementation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) by 2030.

NERC’s Assistant General Manager (AGM) Media, Maryam Abubakar, said in a statement that Amadi’s appointment was to ensure that his experience in power sector regulation was tapped into to realise the three main objectives of the UN’s SE4All.

The SE4All, which is a global initiative led by the UN General Secretary, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, aims to attract global attention, public and private commitments to ensuring universal access to modern energy services, doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency and share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030.

Abubakar however noted that a letter confirming Amadi’s nomination and signed by the Executive Chairman of GEI, Philippe Joubert and the Secretary General of WEC, Dr. Christopher Frei, stated that the GEI was established in Durban South Africa during the 17th edition of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)in 2011.

According to her, the WEC, WBCSD and GSEP then agreed to take the initiative forward while COP 18 lasted in Doha earlier in December 2012.

“The mission of GEI is to establish a fact-based foundation and contribute to more efficient company strategies and government policies. It will report and showcase early voluntary actions taken by the companies, to facilitate universal access to affordable electricity produced in an environmentally, economically and technologically efficient way,” she said.

Abubakar also noted that GEI will support the UN SE4All objective on energy efficiency, universal access and renewable integration, promotion of a balanced view of the benefit and remaining challenges of electricity supply and monitoring and report of major achievements and the results of various actions and programmes undertaken by the leading utilities around the world.

She added that GEI will promote international cooperation and the development of progressive electricity industry communities through exchange of information, data and best practices.
