The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Monsurat Sunmonu has said that the agitation for the autonomy of local councils cannot be out of place and must be supported by all.
Sumonu, who hosted the National President of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Ibrahim Khaleel Abdulkadir, assured that the demand for councils' autonomy will form part of the discussion at the next meeting of the Conference of Speakers in Nigeria.
According to the speaker who is the National Vice Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, the Speakers' body has equally demanded for the autonomy of the states House of Assembly in 2012 constitutional review.
According to her, the demand for the autonomy of local government cannot be out of place and must therefore be reviewed.
Earlier, Khaleed had told Sunmonu that local government governance has been compromised by the 36 States governors in the country, adding that it has been underfunded by the governors thereby bridging the gap of governance between the grassroots people.
He described the position of the state governors on local government autonomy as unacceptable and anti-democratic and disrespect for the fundamental human right of the masses.
