Pastor D. K. Olukoya
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has rescheduled the 3rd edition of the Annual Pastor D. K. Olukoya National U-18 Athletics Championships to now hold between March 7th and 8th at the Sports Complex of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.
Assistant Secretary of the AFN, Olufemi Ajao said in a statement at the weekend that the earlier dates of March 6th and 9th were no longer feasible due to logistics reasons.
“The AFN decided to reschedule the D. K. Olukoya National Under-18 from the initial three-day affair to two-day so as to allow the athletes who that are going to participate in the African Youth Athletics Championships in Warri enough room to be ready for the continental event. We however regret the inconveniences the change will cause officials and athletes,” said the AFN scribe.
Meanwhile, the AFN has restated that in view of the maiden African Youth Championships billed for Warri, Delta between March 23 and 28, on athletes that are below 17 years are eligible to participate.
Previously the D.K Olukoya Championships was opened to Under-18 athletes. But the AFN scaled down the age-limit as the AYC is opened to only Under-17 athletes.
“We are using the D.K Olukoya as our trials. And it is only wise that we restrict it to Under-17 athletes since the African Youth Championships is for Under-17,” AFN President, Solomon Ogba had warned during the media briefing to herald the championships last week.
The 16 athletes selected at the Schools Sports Festival in Port Harcourt last month are to be joined by those that will be picked from the D.K Olukoya meet Lagos to form Nigeria’s team to the maiden AYC in Warri.
