The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Oyo State has commended the state police command for apprehending the former Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Lateef Akinsola, a.k.a. Tokyo, who was declared wanted.
The party warned however that his apprehension would not be complete unless his associate, Mukaila Lamidi, a.k.a. Auxiliary, was also arrested.
The ACN in a statement by its state Publicity Secretary, Hon. Dauda Kolawole, said that the people of the state were beginning to be wary of what it called an “unholy alliance” between the police command and some discredited Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwarts whom it said were the sponsors of the criminal activities of the past in the state.
“It is only in Oyo State that those who disturbed the peace of our state throughout the period of their party’s reign; who used NURTW kingpins as their shields and who spilled the blood of Eleweomo and many of our kinsmen could be allowed to walk the streets free. What is even scary and frightening is that, these remorseless groups are again re-ganging to throw Oyo State back to the period of blood, using same NURTW kingpins,” the ACN said.
“The truth of the matter is that the NURTW kingpins behind the bloodletting of the past did not do so in isolation. They were crudely abetted by the PDP government of the time.
“Tokyo and Auxiliary are the untouchables in the crime world of Oyo State. They have been boasting that some PDP gubernatorial hopeful in the state, using their link with the Federal Government, would soon reverse their wanted tag,” the ACN said.
The party also warned that the people of the state would resist every attempt made by the PDP, using thugs and miscreants, to destabilise “the peace-loving” government of Oyo State.
“Before now, no one could sleep with an eye closed. If you left your home in the morning, you were not sure of when and if you would come back home without landing in the hospital or mortuary. Only God knows how many of our people were killed in the alliance of evil between these NURTW kingpins and the PDP in Oyo State,” the ACN said.
While asking the police to ensure that Tokyo gives an account of what actually transpired “during those bloody years” to the police, the ACN said his arrest and subsequent charge to court by the police would be a litmus test on the police’s integrity and a demonstration of its partiality or otherwise in the political equation of the state.
“In the last few months, a particular former senator, who has the ambition of governing Oyo State in 2015, has been in cahoots with Tokyo and Auxiliary. He has been promising them that President Goodluck Jonathan has directed him to be meeting with the crime duo.
The party added, “the plan is to use them to foment trouble and make Oyo ungovernable for the ACN. Now that Tokyo has been arrested, he should be properly grilled and the truth of this allegation teased out of him.
