The British Standard Institute (BSI), a leading organisation in the field of auditing management systems and processes, has presented the ISO 27001:2005 certificate to Access Bank Plc.

The certification is the world’s accreditation for information protection and security from the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO).

Implementation of information security management systems as represented by the ISO 27001:2005 certification, gives a systematic approach to minimising the risk of unauthorised access or loss of information and ensuring the effective deployment of protective measures.

Director, Banking Supervision Department, CBN, Mrs. Tokunbo Martins, Director, commended the commercial bank for the feat.

Martins, who was represented by an official of the Banking Supervision Department, CBN, Mr. Sola Ogunmoroti, emphasised the need for banks to ensure the deployment of an effective control mechanism for their information technology infrastructure to checkmate cyber crimes and ensure the safety of electronic transactions.

She described information technology as a major driver of banks’ activities.
Martins added: “The certification of Access Bank is coming at a time the whole world has realised the importance of security of transactions.”

Commenting on the certification, Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Access Bank, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, who was represented by an Executive Director of the Bank, Mr. Victor Etuokwu, assured that the commercial bank would continue to develop processes that would ensure high quality and safe banking services to its customers.

“This is a confirmation that certain standards have been met, but a beginning of another journey. We know that it confers on the bank additional responsibilities. We assure not just the CBN, but the BSI, that management is aware of these responsibilities and we are committed to ensuring delivery", he said.

Earlier, the Group Head, Credit Risk Management, Access Bank, Mr. Joe Osojie, said “Access Bank embarked on this project to set the framework for the management of information security for our e-business platform.”
