More than 70 kids drawn from different schools in Cross River State would be concluding their two-day clinic at the Calabar Golf Club Thursday as part of the events of the 2012 Mary Slessor Charity Golf Tournament.

A Member of the Organising Committee, Igbe Aruko, said the clinic which has been a major highlight of the event since it debuted in 2008 has been successful.

“We believe that this is a platform to develop the game and empower more kids to take to the game of golf,” he noted.

This year’s event will be teed-off by the Acting Governor of the state, Effiok Cobhams while over 100 amateur golfers are expected to feature in the two-day event that will kick off Friday.

Already, Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Otunba Olusegun Runsewe and some member of the diplomatic community have been pencilled down to take part in the event.

The players are expected to compete in seven different categories, including category one, two and three for both men and lady golfers. While veteran players would also compete for a different prize.

This year’s edition is being bankrolled by First Bank Nigeria Plc and Lilliker.

The event which is part of the yearly Calabar Carnival has always had very huge following from golfers from across the nation. And the closing ceremony is being planned along with the Queen of Calabar Carnival Award night.

Captain of the club, Eja Dons, has also confirmed that the club’s facilities were ready to host the players that would be showing up for the golf challenge.

“More than anything else, this event has becoming our own opportunity to showcase the quality of golf and hospitality that Cross River State has to offer. And we would be glad to welcome players again this year,” he said.

The event will also be used to also raise funds for the pet project of the First Lady of the state, Mrs Obioma Liyel Imoke.  Mrs Imoke’s project is aimed at helping teenage mothers and abandoned babies in the state.
