Tragedy struck Tuesday night as 30 persons drowned when a passenger boat capsized in Ngbuobohia in Rumuolumeni community, Obio/ Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

An eye witness, who preferred anonymity, said at about 9.00 pm on Tuesday, the boat carrying about 40 people capsized and about 10 persons including a one-and-a-half-year-old baby were immediately rescued and taken to a nearby hospital.

Three of those rescued were unconscious and later died. Subsequently, an additional 23 more corpses were recovered at about 3:25pm yesterday when the river tide receded. At the time of filing this report, 26 corpses have been recovered.

It was gathered that the boat carrying the 40 passengers was overloaded, while travelling from Ngbuobohia to Port Harcourt through Rumuolumeni when the incident occurred.

THISDAY checks revealed that bad roads on the Rumuolumeni and Ogbogoro axis had forced villagers to resort to river transport as an alternative, using a nearby waterfront at Eagle Island, behind the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) to access Ngbuobohia, before boarding a taxi to Port Harcourt.
Prince Collins Onunwo , leader of the Rumuolumeni Community Development Committee (CDC), appealed to the state government to construct wide roads in the area, saying, “Our people voted en masse for Governor Chibuike Amaechi. So, government should immediately construct the College of Education (COE), Rumuolumeni-Ngbuobohia road and the Rumoulumeni-Ogbogoro road.

Meanwhile, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the police and operatives of the Nigeria Navy were spotted packing the bodies of victims, even as the spokesman of the state Police Command, Ben Ugbuegbulam, insisted that only seven persons were rescued alive, while one person had been confirmed dead.

“On 13/12/11 at about 2130hrs at Mgboudohia waterfront, a passenger wooden boat travelling from Eagle Island capsized and combined rescue team of marine police and Rumuolumeni Police Division and the Swift Operation Squad (SOS), led by Decompol Operations and the Navy also joined at the efforts,” Ugwuegbulem wrote in a text message to journalists.

According to Ugbuegbulam, “Seven persons were rescued, including a two-yr-old baby and one person confirmed dead and corpse deposited at mortuary of the Braithwaith Memorial Hospital (BMH). Rescue operations and further investigations going on.”

  • what has been the response of the state government since the incidence? It is quite obvious that the insensitivity of the government to our plight is our bane. The said roads have been deplorable for decades cutting off the residents from city and from the two major higher institutions (University of Port Harcourt and Rivers State University of Science and Technology). Now that these number of souls have been lost, will they still remain insensitive?

  • Too bad that this is happening in this present time...condolence to those who lost love ones in this season of merriment... The rivers state government should ensure such doesn't occur any more, by PROVIDING GOOD ROADS,CHECKING THE WATER WAYS...BY PROVIDING LIFE VESSELS,CHECK OVERLOADING OF BOATS ETC.

  • Its a serious tragedy in recent times....May the souls of the departed rest in peace
If i could recall in the past we used to have marine patrol all around our water ways to checkmate over speeding, over loaded boats, sub standard water moving craft and acts inimical to the safety of lives and properties, what happened to these agencies?

  • well I guess Amaechi spends more time fighting the first lady,GEJ and PDP and receiving accolades for it that constructing a major road like that is not as important as politics of survival.even if the road construction was too expensive(which I doubt) why has he not put in place a proper water transport system?are these operators regulated?Amaechi no try.

  • Its so sad that people would resort to road transport as an alternative means of movement due to the deplorable road network in the state. The Iwofe road is used by people leaving within the Rumuolumeni area which includes workers, the Nigerian Navy,Students, etc has about the worst condition in the entire state and the government seem not to pay any attention to the cries of the users of that road. Finally, why would a state that has about 2/3 of its land mass surrounded by water, without a functional marine patrol?

  • In as much as i would blame the government for not giving needed attention to such roads and other within and around the state capital,my biggest blame goes to the diseased who hard to overload themselves or allowed to be overloaded in a WOODEN BOAT perhaps meant for about 15 passengers...do we have to blame the government for this?Rather than blame the Government, let us all learn from this and say no act like this...if the passengers had insisted on not allowing the boat operators to overload the boat, perhaps they would have been alive today. May God grant them eternal life. Amen
